Pioneering Research-Driven Healthcare Innovation

Since being designated a Research-Centered Hospital in 2013, Korea University Guro Hospital has not only published outstanding research papers but also achieved tangible research outcomes, including triadic patents, technology transfers, and product commercialization. To date, it has established 11 subsidiaries, yielding visible results in medical industrialization. 

Additionally, the hospital has built an open industry-academia-research convergence research infrastructure through the Open Laboratory and the G-Valley Medical Device Development Support Center. It has also conducted projects such as the Korea-US Innovative Outcome Creation R&D 
and the Physician-Scientist Global Collaborative Research Project, generating globally competitive project outcomes.

According to Korea University Guro Hospital, over the past three years, the total research workforce has increased by 9.1% compared to 2021, and the core research workforce has grown by 7.6%. The hospital expanded seating for the Clinical Research Support Office and the Open Data Research Institute to improve the research environment, introduced multi-year contracts for research professors, and raised incentives to secure top talent.

The hospital recorded 338 intellectual property rights (93 international applications, 11 triadic patents) and 1216 SCI(E) research paper publications. It also achieved 38 technology transfers and established two subsidiaries. 

Internal research funding has shown an average annual growth rate of 32.3%, surpassing 10 billion KRW in 2023. The number of approved clinical trials for pharmaceuticals reached 273, an increase of approximately 10% compared to the previous period. The hospital conducted 59 collaborative research projects based on industry-academia-research-hospital networks, and the total number of open research resources amounted to 11777 cases.

As a first-generation certified Research-Centered Hospital, Korea University Guro Hospital has established a three-year operational plan to further enhance its competitiveness. 

First, it plans to increase the participation rate of clinical doctors in research to 38.9% by 2027 and continuously recruit core personnel, such as research-dedicated doctors and research nurses, expanding from the current 216 to 241.

Additionally, the hospital aims to establish a conditional employment contract-based graduate program to train convergent talent for future healthcare. 
It plans to increase SCI(E) paper publications to over 1,220 and achieve a 3% annual increase in intellectual property applications and registrations to drive technology transfer outcomes. 

Research funding is projected to rise from the 80 billion KRW range in 2024 to 90.1 billion KRW by 2027, with internal research funding expanding to 12.7 billion KRW (14.1% of total research funding). Clinical research will be advanced through dedicated organizations such as the Clinical Trial Center, the Clinical Research Protection Center, and the Human Biobank. The hospital plans to establish a clinical management system and achieve AAHRPP re-accreditation to ensure global-level quality control. 
Technology commercialization and entrepreneurship will continue to be supported through open research platforms like the Open Laboratory and the G-Valley Medical Device Development Support Center. Medical data sharing is targeted to reach a total of 2.63 million cases by 2027

Korea University Guro Hospital aims to enhance the quality of public healthcare through initiatives such as developing AI-based emergency medical systems, operating a Vaccine Innovation Center, and managing dementia and mental health centers. It is also taking the lead in precision medicine for severe diseases and promoting domestic medical device development.
